Somewhere between the freshness of green tea and the depth of black tea lives Oolong — and it’s a beautiful place to be. This traditional Chinese loose leaf tea is partially oxidized, giving it a light, sweet flavor with delicate floral and honey-like notes that are unlike anything else in the tea world. It’s the kind of tea that rewards you the more you explore it.
What Makes Oolong Special?
- 🌿 Partially oxidized — Oolong sits in a unique category between green and black tea. The partial oxidation process creates a complex, layered flavor profile that can range from light and floral to rich and toasty depending on the variety.
- 🍯 Naturally sweet — a light, honey-like sweetness with subtle floral notes; no added sugar needed, though a touch of honey is always a lovely addition
- 🧬 Rich in L-theanine — a naturally occurring amino acid found in tea leaves, L-theanine is one of the most studied compounds in tea science and is unique to the Camellia sinensis plant
- 🍵 Versatile — wonderful hot any time of day, and equally delicious cold-brewed straight from the fridge
- 🌍 Centuries of tradition — Oolong has been produced in China’s Fujian and Guangdong provinces for hundreds of years and is central to the Chinese Gongfu tea ceremony
