Some teas are made. Pu-erh is aged. Organic Pu-erh Tea is one of China’s most revered and fascinating teas — a naturally fermented, post-aged dark tea from Yunnan Province with a rich, earthy flavor and a smooth, mellow depth that deepens with every sip. Like a fine wine or aged cheese, Pu-erh develops complexity over time, and no two batches are ever quite the same.
If you’ve never tried Pu-erh before, prepare to be surprised. If you already love it, you know exactly why you’re here.
What Makes Pu-erh Unique?
- 🌍 Post-fermentation aging — unlike any other tea, Pu-erh undergoes a unique microbial fermentation and aging process after production. This transforms its flavor over time, developing earthy, woody, and subtly sweet notes that become more complex with age.
- 🍵 Rich, smooth flavor — earthy and mellow with a subtle sweetness that lingers on the palate; far smoother than most black teas
- 🔬 Naturally rich in polyphenols & catechins — naturally occurring antioxidant compounds found in Camellia sinensis that are widely studied in nutritional and botanical science
- ☕ Contains caffeine — a naturally energizing cup, traditionally enjoyed in China throughout the day
- 🌏 A living tea — aged Pu-erh cakes are considered collectibles in China and can appreciate in value over decades, much like fine wine
Fun Fact: Pu-erh originates from Yunnan Province and has been traded along the ancient Tea Horse Road for over 1,700 years. Rare aged Pu-erh cakes have sold at auction for tens of thousands of dollars!
For the traditional experience, follow the Gongfu brewing method: rinse the leaves briefly with hot water (200°F), then steep for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Re-steep multiple times — Pu-erh opens up beautifully with each infusion.
